Today's
interconnected world underscores the need to be able to communicate
in more than one language. As networks of international cooperation
and and exchange grow in complexity, particularly among governments
and businesses, those who possess foreign language competence
become increasingly valuable, not only for their linguistic
proficiency but also for their cultural knowledge Moreover, learning
a second or third language enhances one's overall writing
and speaking ability.
The
Academic Program
North
Dakota State offers majors in French and Spanish, as well
as Classical Languages. Also available are: a minor in German;
first-year Arabic, with the oportunity to study in Morocco
for a second year; and Chinese, Japanese, and Russian through
the Tri-College course exchange.
While
the main emphasis for all courses in Modern Languages is
proficiency in the language, they also emphasize history,
society, and culture, in order to provide students with a
broad understanding of other countries and peoples. We encourage
language majors to take advantage of course offerings in
areas such as history, anthropology, sociology, political
science, linguistics, and the fine arts which will strengthen
their

Abroad
Living
and studying in another culture is essential to becoming
multi-lingual, and it often proves to be the most enlightening
experience in one's undergraduate education. We strongly
encourage all language students to study abroad; it is the
way nearly all language majors choose to fulfill their required
capstone experience for degrees in French and Spanish.
